Our team is our strongest asset! Our knowledge in orthodontics is unrivaled and we will always strive to exceed your expectations.

Meet Dr. Shems

Meg – Office Manager

I am here to make sure your experience at our practice is top notch. I am always available to discuss finances, set up your next appointment and answer any questions regarding treatment! After studying at the University of Southern Maine, I was interested in combining my love of working one-on-one with people with finance. Dr. Shems has been a wonderful leader and a great role model for me. Her conservative philosophy transcends through her work; a decision is always made with the patient’s best interest at heart.

I live in Portland with my wonderful husband, Scott and our two daughters. We like to spend all of our free time enjoying the great outdoors!

Janet – Orthodontic Assistant & Clinical Supervisor

Working alongside Dr. Shems for the past six years has been wonderful. She always asks our patients about their lives and actually cares about their response. Her approach to orthodontics is conservative, which I think parents really appreciate. It is really easy to feel good about the decisions Dr. Shems makes and proudly stand behind them.

I have two children, Taylor and Nick, and a dog named Vinny. Taylor is a nutrition major at SMCC and works at World Gym. Nick is currently a junior at Boston College and plays baseball for them. I spend my free time with my family and friends and I love the summer in Maine! My favorite activities are being on the lake, waterskiing, and boating.

Penny – Clinical Assistant & Lab Technician

I became a huge fan of orthodontics when I found myself as an orthodontic patient! I realized the positive impact that having a great smile had on my self-esteem. I wanted to be part of making others just as happy! I’ve been in the orthodontic field for just over 21 year. I’m a clinical assistant and a lab technician. I make all of our patients’ retainers and other appliances in our in-house lab and am also a trained orthodontic assistant. I love seeing the smile on a patient’s face when their braces come off! I’m a bit quiet, but I get the job done.

I love my job and when I’m not working, you may find me out kayaking, walking/hiking, riding my mountain bike or my spin bike.

Carolyn – Orthodontic Assistant

After growing up in Massachusetts, I began my career in orthodontics fifteen years ago while living in Florida. Since making my way back to New England in 2012, I am so fortunate to have continued my journey with Dr. Shems in an office which provides top-notch care to every patient. My goal is to use my knowledge and skills to provide exceptional orthodontic care in a comfortable, professional environment. I feel blessed to be a part of each patient’s journey in achieving a healthy, beautiful smile they can be proud of.

When I am not in the office, I enjoy spending time with my family and fur babies. I also love to be outdoors, especially in the garden. On rainy days, I test my skills in the kitchen cooking favorite dishes and trying new recipes.

Cheryl – Orthodontic Assistant

I have been working in the dental field for over 36 years now. I started as a junior dental assistant in an orthodontic practice at the age of 16 years old. Ever since then I have loved dentistry, especially orthodontics. I spent 19 years in general dentistry and another 17 years in the orthodontic field. I thoroughly enjoy working with patients to help improve their smiles and build their confidence!

My favorite part about working with Dr. Shems and the team is helping patients on a daily basis fulfill their dental needs and enjoying each other while doing it. While orthodontics is a fast pace profession, the energy in our office is unmatched. I especially enjoy this team because of their thoughtfulness, compassion, sympathy and energy. I’m grateful everyday to work for Dr. Shems.

I grew up in Massachusetts but studied in Maine, which is where I met my husband. I reside in Gorham with my husband and college-aged son.

Outside of the office I enjoy baking, working in my yard or around my house, skiing, and entertaining friends with my family.

Becky – Orthodontic Assistant

My name is Becky. I started my dental career initially in 2010, beginning at Dr. Shems’s office. From there I explored general and pediatric dentistry. It wasn’t long before I discovered my passion in the dental world is in the orthodontic field. I returned to Dr. Shems’s office part time in 2018 after being a stay at home mom to my son.

Patient care and connection is my number one priority. I feel grateful to be able to work alongside Dr. Shems and staff. It is such a positive atmosphere! When I am not at work I enjoy quality time with my son Morgan, my husband Trevor, and our two black labs Lily and Remington. Some of our favorite things to do together are fishing, hiking, traveling, and camping up in northern Maine.
